" Azim Hasim Premji is the chairman of Wipro and main person behind the success of WIPRO Ltd. The first Indian to join the Giving Pledge, created by Warren Buffett, Tim Cock & Bill Gates. In the 1980s the young entrepreneur , recognizing the importance of the emerging IT field, took advantage of the vacuum left behind by the expulsion of IBM from India, changed the company name to Wipro and entered the high-technology sector by manufacturing minicomputers under technological collaboration with an American company Sentinel Computer Corporation. "
Unknown Facts :
1. He is the first Indian to sign up for "The Giving Pledge" that encourage wealthy people to contribute most of their wealth to philanthropic causes.
2. He dropped out of Stanford University at age 21 to take over the reins of Wipro following the sudden demise of his father. At that time, the company made hydrogenated cooking fat. ( He completed his degree over 30 Years later).
3. AzimPremji is not finicky about the mode of travel. He always travels Economy Class. He is also not worried about the brand of a car or taxi that he use to commute. Once when the car that was booked for him did not turn up, he coolly took an auto-rickshaw to his destination. Compare this with another boss, who waited for 25 hours for a Mercedes to turn up ( the time it took to get a replacement when an alternate Toyota or Skoda were available immediately).
4. Whenever he can, AzimPremji always stays at the company guest house. He takes food from the company canteen. He says, " What is good for my employees is good for me". His son was refused to stay at the company guest house, since it was only for employee.!!
5. He is also very finicky about time . If an employee were to tell him that he will meet him in 30-45 minutes, he would ask him 30 or 45 to avoid this, it is said that they would conduct trial runs beforehand so they could give him the correct time.
6. At one point of time, he had a terror threat on his life . During the entire period, he insisted that co-workers with him travel separately since he did not want them to get hurt in case any incident happened.
7. He enjoys trekking and loves watching movies; he often turns to his senior executive for recommendations.
8. Premji holds late Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata (populary known as JRD Tata ) as his icon. In an article Premji wrote that JRD has been an icon for him, like many other people of his generation. He wrote that what he "really admired in JRD was his ability to manage a very complex business portfolio with a rare clarity of mind" Another quality i admired in him was "his obsession with quality," wrote Premji.
9. The 69 year old philanthropist believes change is inevitable. And so he advises everyone to develop their own early warning system, which sets the alarm and prepares one for the changes ahead. He believes ' being forewarned is being forearmed' even when things are going right.
10. Also, in the largest act of philanthropy by an Indian, Premji pledged to give about Rs.8,8546 crore (2 Billion Dollar) to the Azim Premji Foundation to improve school education in India. This is the biggest act of individual philanthropy in India.
11. AzimPremji's favourite quote : " As you get bigger, you have to delegate. It's also an excellent way to get staff involved in the company's operation."
